Once a year going out to the movies is more than enough for me.

At least some theaters are warning people to turn OFF their cell phones, and no texting or lighted phone screens visible, or they'll get kicked out the door with the first complaint! About time!

But the newest issue is bedbugs infesting movie theaters...

Myself, I'm a magnet for talkers. Wherever I sit, they sit nearby. Don't even wanna think about bedbugs. Yuck.

This summer I actually wound up seeing three, count 'em three, major blockbusters, all due to having kid-sat my 10 year-old nephew for a week in June. So, yes, I have actually seen, in the theater, the new Pirates movie; Thor; and Kung Fu Panda II.

If, under some set of circumstances I can't even imagine, I had watched these on my own, I would have hated them all. But because I saw them with a ten year old who was having a great time, I also had a pretty good time - bloated, over-orchestrated, hectoring junk on the screen notwithstanding.

The inspiring coda: when we got back from the third movie, I said, Kid, let me show the kind of movie Uncle Andy likes, and we watched The Robot Versus the Aztec Mummy on IA, and I'm proud to say the kid enjoyed that one at least as much as the others...we also watched the Flying Serpent because I wanted him to get a sense that non-CGI effects where the hand of the human creator is glaringly obvious are more fun, more human, and in every way better than 300 gajillion dollar ones and zeros flying around the screen. And he totally got it.

Am I a great uncle, or what?

Ah, sounds like great fun! My nephews and nieces are all in their mid-30s now, but we did watch TV together back in the 1980s. Nowadays they are busy with their own lives and kids.

The last new movie I saw that I really loved was BIG FISH.

I thought that one was pretty good too.
